The seven members of the IPPO Council are directly and indirectly elected by a majority of all IPPO non-governmental organization members. Elections are held annually. Seats are allocated fairly among all members, according to the regions of Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Europe, and Oceania, with two-sevenths of the members being renewed each year. The term of each member of the IPPO Council does not exceed two terms. There is no restriction on consecutive membership. As of February 2025, 32 IPPO members have obtained consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
