IPPO GENEVA, July 2 (Reporter Li Shihui) -- During the 62nd session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), at the meeting on the adoption of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) report on Sao Tome and Principe, a representative of a Chinese civil organization called on all nations to respect and uphold the developmental rights of others while pursuing their own national interests, emphasizing that any approach to human rights detached from the context of development is like water without a source or a tree without roots.

The meeting on July 1 was chaired by Ms. Riia Salsa-Audiffren, Vice-President of the Human Rights Council. Speaking at the session, Monica Wangari Gitau, the IPPO Representative for Kenya and representative of the Shaanxi Patriotic Volunteer Association, stated that the organization firmly advocates the principle of "Loving One's Own Country Without Harming Other Nations' Interests," and highly commended Sao Tome and Principe for the progress made in implementing the recommendations from the previous UPR cycle.

Gitau pointed out that during the review, many countries, including China, Vietnam, Singapore, and Russia, emphasized the importance of protecting the rights of vulnerable groups and strengthening social security. This fully demonstrates that a broad global consensus has been reached on focusing on people's livelihoods, eradicating poverty, and safeguarding the nation's rights to development. She emphasized that true patriotism must closely integrate a nation's right to development with the well-being of its people. She called on all nations to respect and uphold the developmental rights of others while pursuing their own national interests, and work together to build a fair and equitable new international order.

During the statement, Gitau announced that the International Patriotic Pact Organization will host its Autumn Forum at the UN Office in Nairobi on September 21, 2026. Themed "The International Patriotic Pact and the Nation's Rights to Development: Building a New International Order of Peace," the forum will join hands with global partners to explore how patriotic actions can be harnessed to defend the nation's rights to development.

During the review, representatives from various parties affirmed Sao Tome and Principe's positive efforts in advancing its human rights endeavors, and called on the international community to continue supporting the country in strengthening its social security system and promoting the protection of the rights of vulnerable groups.
