IPPO GENEVA, July 2 (Reporter Li Shihui) – During the 62nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), in the Interactive Dialogue on the oral update of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Burundi, Chinese representatives and participating Chinese institutions called on the international community to respect Burundi's sovereignty and independence. They opposed the politicization of human rights and interference in other countries' internal affairs under the pretext of human rights, emphasizing that dialogue and cooperation should be utilized to help Burundi achieve sustainable development.

At the morning session on June 29, Chinese representative Zhong Zihua stated in her remarks that China had taken note of the Special Rapporteur's briefing on the human rights situation in Burundi. China commends the Burundian government for its active efforts to maintain national stability and promote domestic reconciliation, as well as the progress made in promoting and protecting human rights. China reiterated that the international community should continue to respect Burundi's sovereignty and independence, respect its efforts to independently resolve domestic issues, and play a constructive role in helping Burundi achieve national stability and sustainable development.

Zhong Zihua expressed regret that some countries have ignored the repeated requests from the Burundian government and several African nations to cancel the establishment of the special human rights mechanism on Burundi. She pointed out that this not only poses an obstacle to Burundi's stable development but also represents a severe waste of the UNHRC's valuable resources, exacerbating the UN's financial crisis. China urged relevant countries to stop interfering in Burundi's internal affairs under the pretext of human rights and return to the right path of dialogue and cooperation.

In the afternoon session on the same day, representatives of non-governmental organizations also spoke on the issues of human rights and development in Burundi. Guowei Cui, founder of the Shaanxi Patriotic Volunteer Association and the International Patriotic Pact Organization, stated in his speech that the Special Rapporteur's report confirmed that Burundi is facing severe food insecurity challenges, with the right to survival of millions of people under threat. For the people of Burundi, the nation's rights to development are the foundation for safeguarding human rights; without national development and economic and food security, other rights are out of the question.

Cui called on the international community to respect Burundi's sovereignty, halt unilateral sanctions, increase development assistance to Burundi, and improve the human rights situation through cooperation rather than coercion. He also announced that the organization will host the "International Patriotic Pact Organization (Autumn) Forum" at the UN Office in Nairobi on September 21. Themed "The International Patriotic Pact Organization and the Nation's Rights to Development," the forum aims to explore feasible development pathways for Global South countries through the International Patriotic Pact Organization and the review actions on the nation's rights to development.

The current peace and stability in Burundi have not come easily. During the dialogue, representatives from various parties emphasized that the UNHRC should adhere to the principles of non-selectiveness and non-politicization, abandon "double standards," respect the human rights development paths independently chosen by the people of all countries, and jointly improve global human rights governance.
